Wash Away Your Worries - All your baby skin care and laundry queries answered

Wash Away Your Worries

All your baby skin care and laundry queries answered

Newborn laundry tips

·        Wash your baby’s clothes before they wear them for the first time, to remove impurities and soften the fibres.

·        Don’t use more washing powder or detergent than is recommended by the manufacturer.

·        Choose natural cotton fibres to allow their skin to breathe.

·        Use fabric conditioner specially designed for sensitive skin to soften fabrics.

·        Look for the British Skin Foundation Logo for reassurance when choosing products.

·        Tackle sick by scraping off as much as possible and then rinsing under cold water.  Wash in a non-biological washing powder at the maximum temperature advised by the care label.

·        Remove urine with a cold rinse, followed by a wash immediately before the stain ‘sets’.

·        Scrape off solid poo then soak in Nappy Soak and machine wash with a non-biological powder.

Spot your baby’s skin condition

Spot your baby’s skin condition

Take action to solve minor skin irritations with expert advise from the British Skin Foundation.

Eczema

  • Eczema is a red, scaly, itchy, inflamed rash that affects about one in five children.
  • Treat by applying a fragrance-free emollient (moisturiser) daily, every few hours if necessary, to help protect the skin.

Milk Spots

  • Some newborn babies have small white spots on the face.  Sometimes known as ‘milk spots’ these may be enlarged sebaceous glands, or tiny retention cysts (milia).  They are common, harmless, and should be left to disappear by themselves.

Nappy rash

  • Babies can also suffer from sore, irritated skin on the bottom, which is called nappy rash.
  • To prevent nappy rash never leave a wet or dirty nappy on for longer than necessary.  Cleanse the skin at each change, preferably with cotton wool and water, and use a simple nappy cream as a barrier.

Cradle cap

  • Cradle cap forms greasy, scaly patches on the scalp.  It’s usually only temporarily and will not harm or distress your baby as it is generally not itchy or sore.
  • Treat it gently shampooing the scalp daily with a mild baby shampoo and applying an emollient cream available from your pharmacist.
  • In severe cases your doctor may prescribe an ointment.

Did you know? Washing powder is rarely the cause of skin problems.  It only causes skin irritation if not thoroughly rinsed out of clothing.  Most washing machines rinse more thoroughly than hand washing.

Reusable nappies better for the environment - it’s official!

defra.jpg

The latest report by the Environment Agency confirms that reusable nappies, if used and laundered according to manufacturer’s guidelines, can reduce the global warming impact of using reusable nappies over disposables by an incredible 40%.*

Reusable nappies, if used in an environmentally responsible way, create significantly less environmental impact than disposable nappies.

The new report is an update of the Environment Agency’s initial report on the life cycle assessment study for disposable and reusable nappies, which was released in May 2005. The much criticised 2005 report seemed to conclude that there was no significant difference between the environmental impacts of disposable and reusable nappies.

Jane Johnstone of Perfectly Happy People says “This update has been published to correct the misunderstanding created by the initial report. It confirms that responsible use of reusable nappies would reduce the modern parent’s environmental impact. Many people questioned the 2005 report and this led to the government commissioning this latest update. Reusable nappies are not only better for the environment, as confirmed by this report, but can save parents considerable amounts of money, which is particularly resonant in the present economic climate.”

Defra’s findings have apparently been contradicted in the Sunday Times, who have latched on to the report’s findings regarding laundry habits. They state that if parents used tumble dryers and washed the nappies at 90oC the carbon impact could ‘spiral to 993kg of CO2.’ However, most parents wash at more sensible temperatures!

* An updated Lifecycle Assessment Study for Disposable and Reusable Nappies, published 17/10/08.

Put a dry towel in the dryer

This works brilliantly for any wash load.

Pop a dry towel in the drier and it can reduce the dry time for your wash load by 10 minutes. Over a year that mounts up to quite a bit of electric savings!.

quick drying for nappies

Because the Kushies Ultra nappy has a built on waterproof it can take slightly longer to dry than other washable nappies. However, if you fasten the tabs, as you normally would, then flip the nappy inside out - you prsent the inner cotton layers to the warm air in a tumble dryer. This way they dry faster and of course are not hooked togethr by the velcro tabs. Easy to fold too - just flip back to the right side, tuck in the flap and they are ready to store until needed.

Free washable nappies

Did you know many local councils sponsor starter packs and offer incentive cash back to mums who are willing to try and/or use washable nappies. Ask you local council if they are switched on to ‘real nappies’ and what sponsorship they provide. You’ll be pleased you did
