Baby Show Roundup

Now is the tie of all good men to come to the aid of party. We have just come back from the Baby Show in Birmingham and we would like to share some of our experiences with you. The organisers have said there was something like 28,000 visitors to the show and we noticed that there was a lot more men in attendance than we have seen at the other shows in London.

So well done the dads in Birmingham who went along to show. The dads are increasingly partaking in the learning of information in regard to babies and toddlers. We noticed that mums were delighted that the fathers, not just to carry the extra parcels, but also to enjoy in the expectancy of the new baby.

As some of you may have seen from the exhibition we had focused on demonstrating and explaining the benefits of the WidgeyTM nursing pillow to expecting mums. We followed a basic procedure of explaining to them that the first benefits of the pillow are for her own comfort during her pregnancy. Many of them are delighted when they sat down on our chairs and we showed them that if they put the pillow around their back and positioned at the main body of the pillow at approximately bra strap level then they could experience some relief on their lower back pain that is so common in pregnancy. Another advantage of the pillow is being able to be put through the knees for sleeping comfort during the night.

Of course the main benefit of the pillow is when it comes to breast-feeding. The mums were able to feel, and to test the nursing for comfort, to realise the difference between our pillow and others in the marketplace. It was immediately obvious that is that our pillow is very firm. This firmness means that instead of holding a floppy pillow, holding the baby and holding the breast the mother does not have to hold our pillow at all. The pillow grips them gently around the tummy and provides a good flat surface for the baby’s spine to rest upon. Due to the size of the pillow itself, when the baby rested on the pillow, in 90 percent of the cases the babies mouth came easily within reach of the mother’s nipple. This would enable a mother to use just one hand to support the baby head to the breast and leave the other hand free to enjoy a drink of water or tea whilst feeding. It is a common advice for a nursing mother to drink glass of water at each breast-feeding session to replace liquids in her body.

Again, the very important factor, if the mother has a C-section or caesarean birth then it is essential that a nursing pillow is used. Our visitors were able to understand how the WidgeyTM would help remove the weight of the baby from her lower tummy and thereby relieve pressure on the lower tummy. Midwives will definitely instruct any mother who has had a caesarean birth to use a nursing pillow when breast-feeding.

We were also able to demonstrate how the pillow could be used in the new mode of “rugby” feeding, that midwives recommend, again to remove any weight from the lower tummy muscles following a caesarean birth.

Many mothers were interested in the fact that we would then use the pillow on the floor to nestle a new baby of approximately eight weeks into the pillow after breast-feeding. Of course the baby cannot fall if they are already on the floor and the safest place to put a baby would be on the floor and to ensure that they were comfortable. Once a child achieves three or four months of age it is also possible to turn the baby on their tummy resting over the pillow in order to enjoy tummy play and develop muscles in their back. It the child is learning to sit in that wobbly stage they would nestle and sit within the curvature of the pillow. Of course a mother should never leave the baby unattended and should be in front of the baby if they are in the sitting position until they have developed the muscles and can sit unattended.

Having been shown all the different advantages and usages for the pillow of course everybody bought one and we were sold out by Sunday mid-day. It was great fun watching everybody leaving the show carrying their WidgeyTM pillow in the various colours and prints that we had had available for them to choose from. In fact it wasn’t just the problem of should we buy a WidgeyTM nursing pillow it was which one should we have.

The next Baby Show is in London in October at Earls Court and again we will be taking our WidgeyTM nursing pillow to demonstrate and show to the mothers in London all the benefits. We look forward to seeing our new mums at the next show.
