BBC - Homes - No waste like home

Nappies are a success for waste management. On 1st September on BBC2 at 8.30 there was programme featuring a normal family in the UK who had three babies in disposable nappies. The programme focused on the waste in their home and a large part of this was the cost and disposing of the disposable nappies. Kushies were the nappies used in changing the family over to washable nappies. the family were delighted. The mother was typical of today’s modern mother who had not questioned the cost of her nappies and what happened to them after they went into the bin. Penny, the presenter, pointed out the costs, the ease of cloth nappies (start with a bucket) and the facts of the waste going into landfill which included a fantastic recycling operation in Holland.
With three babies in nappies you would have thought the mother would be resistant to using cloth nappies but as it turned out she was more than willing, particularly when she found they worked well and were easy to use. Perhaps the failing of the programme team to suggest a washing line in her garden gave her the biggest problem of drying the nappies but we can report this has now been resolved and the mum has been using the nappies for the last 6 months very happily. Her girls are using kushies for the majority of their nappy days with the exception of perhaps a long day out or holidays. The mum also realised the benefits and ease of PHP’s biodegradable wipes and liners from her education in waste management.
The point of the programme was to investigate what daily wastage was happening in their home from poor insulation, heat loss and recycling the daily dustbin contents, but they also did a fantastic job in highlighting the use of washable nappies in a busy little home. I think the mum is to be congratulated on her efforts.
